The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a 1979 comic science fiction novel by the English writer Douglas Adams, based on his BBC radio series of the same name and the first book in a series of five. Moments before Earth is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, the ordinary Englishman Arthur Dent is rescued by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the guidebook of the title. Their absurd journey across the galaxy brings in a two-headed president, a depressed robot and the answer to life, the universe and everything: 42.
