At the Drones Club, members known as Eggs, Beans and Crumpets tell most of the stories in Young Men in Spats (1936), swapping tales about the scrapes of their friends. Several feature Freddie Widgeon, who keeps falling in love and losing the girl, and the book includes "Uncle Fred Flits By," the first appearance of Frederick, Earl of Ickenham, better known as Uncle Fred. A few Mulliner stories close it.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
