Uncle Fred in the Springtime (1939) brings Frederick, fifth Earl of Ickenham, to Blandings Castle. Uncle Fred, an irrepressible elderly peer who loves spreading what he calls sweetness and light, arrives posing as a nerve specialist. He is there to help his nephew Pongo Twistleton and a set of young lovers, while the Duke of Dunstable has designs on the Empress, Emsworth's cherished sow, and nearly everyone at the castle is pretending to be someone else.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
