The Power and the Glory
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Graham Greene's 1940 novel takes place in the Mexican state of Tabasco in the 1930s, where the Catholic Church is outlawed and its priests are hunted. A nameless whisky priest, worn down by guilt and drink and the father of an illegitimate child, keeps moving between villages to say Mass and hear confessions, pursued by an idealistic police lieutenant who takes hostages to force his surrender and shadowed by a mestizo hoping to collect a reward.
