The Montezuma Strip of Alan Dean Foster's novel is a megalopolis along the old U.S.-Mexican border. Police inspector Angel Cardenas takes the case of a man found dead with most of his internal organs missing, and learns that the victim lived two lives, as an executive and a Texas businessman. When the dead man's booby-trapped house nearly kills Cardenas and his partner, the case widens into a world of sapient apes and rogue computers.
