The Great Train Robbery
Last updated October 31, 2026
In Victorian London, the gentleman criminal Edward Pierce plans to steal a shipment of gold bound for British troops fighting in the Crimean War. The gold travels by train, locked in heavy safes. Michael Crichton based the novel on a real railway robbery of the 1850s. He fills it with period detail about the city's underworld, its slang, its class divisions and its new railways, and follows the long, patient planning the theft requires.
