The engineer Vannevar Morgan sets out to build a space elevator, a cable that would carry people and cargo into orbit. He wants to anchor it on a sacred mountain on Taprobane, an island based on Sri Lanka. Arthur C. Clarke interweaves Morgan's project and its opponents with the story of an ancient king who built a palace on the same island centuries earlier, linking two very different dreams of reaching the heavens.
