Andrew Tobias first published this memoir in 1973 under the pen name John Reid. It recounts his childhood and youth as a model student who worked hard to be the best at everything while hiding the fact that he was gay. Written with humor and candor, it follows him through prep school and Harvard as he keeps up appearances and slowly begins to accept who he is. It became an early and widely read coming-out story.
