Sally Nicholas, a young woman working as a dance partner in a New York dance hall, inherits a modest fortune at the start of The Adventures of Sally (1922; U.S. title Mostly Sally). On holiday in France she meets Ginger Kemp, an awkward Englishman who falls for her, and back in New York she uses the money to help her feckless brother Fillmore and her fiancé, a struggling playwright, put on a show.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
