Story of O is an erotic novel issued in Paris in 1954 under the pen name Pauline Réage by Anne Desclos, who revealed her authorship in 1994. She wrote it as love letters to the critic Jean Paulhan, who supplied a preface. It follows O, a Paris fashion photographer whose lover René takes her to a château at Roissy, where she is trained in sexual submission before being handed to the Englishman Sir Stephen. The book drew obscenity charges against its publisher in France.
