Speak is a young adult novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, first published in 1999. Melinda Sordino starts high school as an outcast after calling the police at a summer party, and she stops speaking about what happened there. Through her art class and her own wit, she slowly comes to face the truth that she was raped by an older student. The novel was a National Book Award finalist and is widely taught in schools.
