Ring for Jeeves (1953; US title The Return of Jeeves) is the only Jeeves novel without Bertie Wooster. Jeeves is serving Bill Belfry, the hard-up ninth Earl of Rowcester, who has been earning a living as a disguised racecourse bookmaker. One lucky punter leaves Bill owing more than he can pay, and Rowcester Abbey may be sold to a rich American widow. Wodehouse adapted the story from a play he wrote with Guy Bolton.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
