Flinx returns to Earth for only the second time to search the Shell, the United Church's computer network, for his records. Using his empathic talent, he reaches its secure files and finds new information about the Meliorare Society. The file has already been stolen by an agent who has fled to Pyrassis, a bleak desert world that Alan Dean Foster places in AAnn territory. Flinx follows, and a sabotaged shuttle strands him far from his quarry.
