A virus made by human scientists has killed nearly all of humanity across the stars. Ruslan, perhaps the last human alive, is rescued by the Myssari, aliens who want to study him and use his DNA to recreate humankind. In return, the Myssari promise to search for the fabled first world of humanity, called Earth. Ruslan hopes that if it exists, he might find other survivors there. Alan Dean Foster writes it as pastoral science fiction.
