If I Were You (1931) begins with a startling claim. Anthony, the young fifth Earl of Droitwich, is engaged to a wealthy American heiress when his old nurse announces that she switched him at birth with her own son, Syd Price, a Cockney barber. Anthony agrees to give up his title and work in the barber's shop, while Syd tries life as a lord, and the swap tests both men and the engagement.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
