French Leave
Categories: Humor & Entertainment, Literature & Fiction
Three American sisters who keep chickens on Long Island are at the center of French Leave (1956). Coming into a little money, they decide to spend it on a holiday in France rather than save it. Terry, the youngest, heads for a fashionable seaside resort and poses as a rich young woman hunting for a husband. Her stay throws her together with a penniless French marquis, his son and a string of impostors.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
