Rudolf Slatin's account of his years in the Sudan, first published in 1896. Governor of Darfur under Egyptian rule, Slatin fought the Mahdist uprising, surrendered in 1884 and spent eleven years as a prisoner of the Mahdi and the Khalifa at Omdurman before escaping in 1895. He describes the fall of Khartoum and life inside the Mahdist state.
