In 1949 a struggling young writer living in Venice, California, becomes convinced that a series of deaths in the decaying seaside town are murders. His first clue is a body he finds in an old lion cage sunk in a canal. He teams up with a gruff police detective named Elmo Crumley to find a killer who seems to prey on the town's lonely people. Ray Bradbury drew on his own early years for this atmospheric mystery.
