Machines across the galaxy stop doing their assigned work and go looking for a nonhuman species of higher intelligence. Their search soon produces a threat to people and machines alike. The fate of the galaxy ends up in the hands of five senior citizens and their faithful food processor, who set out to deal with the crisis. Alan Dean Foster plays the premise for comedy, setting elderly heroes and household appliances against a cosmic problem.
