Years after their last adventure, Jon-Tom and his otter friend Mudge have settled into a dull domestic life and hate it. When a drifting cloud of lost chords starts following Jon-Tom, they decide to follow the music. It leads them to a thief who is stealing music. The search pits the middle-aged spellsinger and Mudge against a selfish elephant, a greedy bear and a crude whirlpool. A late Spellsinger novel from Alan Dean Foster.
