On Halloween in 1954 a young screenwriter at a Hollywood movie studio receives an anonymous note inviting him to a cemetery at midnight. There he finds what appears to be the body of a studio head who died twenty years before. With the help of a special effects artist, he tries to learn who is behind the hoax and why the studio fears it. The novel draws on Bradbury's own years working in Hollywood.
