We Are Not Ourselves (2014) is the debut novel of Matthew Thomas, following an Irish American woman in New York from the 1950s to the early twenty-first century. Eileen Tumulty grows up in Queens with alcoholic parents and dreams of a better, more respectable life. She marries Ed Leary, a scientist, and they have a son, but her ambitions for a larger house and higher status clash with Ed's contentment, and his behaviour begins to change in ways that threaten the family.
