Visions of Japan: Kawase Hasui's Masterpieces
By Kawase Hasui, Kendall H. Brown
Categories: Arts & Photography
Visions of Japan (Hotei Publishing) presents one hundred woodblock prints by Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), edited by Kendall H. Brown from a catalog of his complete prints. Hasui was a central artist of the shin-hanga movement, which revived traditional woodblock printing from the 1910s, and worked closely with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. His landscapes show temples, villages and harbors across Japan in snow, rain, twilight and moonlight. The prints are reproduced with annotations, and two essays place them in his career.
