Up the Organization, by Robert Townsend, former president of Avis Rent a Car, was first published in 1970 as a series of short, irreverent entries on how to run a company. Arranged alphabetically, the entries attack bureaucracy, wasteful perks, committees and excessive staff, and argue for treating employees as capable adults. Townsend draws on his time leading Avis, where the 'We try harder' campaign helped turn the company around. A commemorative edition appeared in 2007.
