Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings
Categories: Children's Books, Literature & Fiction
Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings is Joel Chandler Harris's 1880 collection of African American folktales told in dialect by a fictional storyteller. On a Georgia plantation, the elderly Uncle Remus tells a little boy stories about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and other animals, including the famous Tar-Baby tale. The book also includes songs and sayings. It brought these folktales to a wide audience, though its portrayal of plantation life has drawn wide criticism.

- Mark Twain: “Uncle Remus is most deftly drawn, and is a lovable and delightful creation; he, and the little boy, and their relations with each other, are high and fine literature, and worthy to live (Letter to Joel Chandler Harris, Elmira, Aug. 10, 1881; Mark Twain's Letters, ed. Paine)”
