Unaccustomed Earth
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Unaccustomed Earth (2008) is a collection of eight short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri. The stories follow Bengali American families and the children of immigrants through love, marriage, grief and belonging across generations and continents. In the second half, linked tales return to Hema and Kaushik as adults, balancing intimate domestic scenes with the long pull between Calcutta, Rhode Island and Rome.

- Fareed Zakaria: “This week's book of the week is Jhumpa Lahiri's "Unaccustomed Earth." Every summer I try to make a point to read some fiction, and this collection of short stories was the best of the bunch, intelligent, quietly moving and beautifully written. You must buy this book.”
