King Leontes of Sicilia becomes convinced that his pregnant wife, Hermione, has betrayed him with his childhood friend Polixenes, King of Bohemia. His jealousy brings disaster on his court in this Shakespeare romance, first published in 1623. His infant daughter, Perdita, is abandoned in Bohemia and raised by shepherds. Sixteen years later, at a sheep-shearing festival, she and Polixenes's son Florizel fall in love. The play contains the stage direction "Exit, pursued by a bear."
