The Wilder Shores of Marx

The Wilder Shores of Marx (1991) by Anthony Daniels, who also writes as Theodore Dalrymple, recounts journeys through five communist countries in the late 1980s: Albania, Cuba, North Korea, Romania and Vietnam. Daniels sets the official claims of each regime against the shortages, queues, propaganda and fear of ordinary daily life. He records what the travels showed about how these systems worked on the ground and why they kept going for as long as they did.
