The White Bone is a 1998 novel by the Canadian writer Barbara Gowdy, shortlisted for the Giller Prize, the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction and the Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. The story is told entirely from the point of view of a family of African elephants whose herds have been broken apart by drought and by ivory poachers. Gowdy, who based the book on scientific studies and field guides, follows the survivors as they search for the mythical white bone, the bleached rib of a newborn elephant said to lead the way to safety.
