The Waves (1931) is a novel by Virginia Woolf told through the voices of six friends, from childhood to old age. Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny and Louis speak in a series of interior monologues, interspersed with descriptions of the sun moving across the sea over a single day. Their lives are linked by school, friendship and their shared love for a seventh friend, Percival, whose death affects them all.
