The Unabridged Devil's Dictionary
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Ambrose Bierce spent decades writing satirical definitions for newspaper columns, and this 2000 edition from the University of Georgia Press, edited by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi, assembles them in full. The main text contains 1,645 definitions, restoring entries omitted from earlier editions and removing nearly two hundred wrongly attributed to Bierce. Appendices add supplemental definitions, making this the fullest version of Bierce's sardonic dictionary of politics, religion, law and human vanity.
