Francesca Fremantle and Chögyam Trungpa's translation of the Bardo Thödol, the Great Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo, was first published in 1975. The text, attributed to Padmasambhava and discovered by Karma Lingpa, guides the dying and the dead. It presents the visions of peaceful deities in the first week after death and wrathful deities in the following week. Trungpa's foreword explains how the teaching was transmitted, and his commentary treats the bardo as a psychological state experienced in life, setting out six bardos.
