The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin

By Beatrix Potter

Categories: Children's Books

Beatrix Potter's 1903 tale, first sketched in a 1901 picture letter to Norah Moore, is set on a lake modeled on Derwentwater in the English Lake District. Each autumn day the red squirrels sail on rafts to Owl Island to gather nuts, bringing Old Brown the owl polite gifts of mice, a mole, minnows and honey. Nutkin's brother Twinkleberry and the others bow respectfully, but impertinent Nutkin dances, bounces and teases the silent owl with riddles.
