Sharon Kay Penman's first novel, published in 1982, retells the life of Richard III, the last Plantagenet king of England, who has long been remembered as a villain. Spanning the Wars of the Roses, it follows Richard from his boyhood through the reign of his brother Edward IV, his marriage to Anne Neville, his seizure of the throne and his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

- Hillary Clinton: “I've recently discovered the historical novels by Sharon K. Penman. I'm reading her series about King Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Very interesting, not only well done, but really engrossing.”
