The Shepherd's Life: Modern Dispatches from an Ancient Landscape
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, Sports & Outdoors
James Rebanks's memoir describes life on the Lake District farm in northern England where his family has kept Herdwick sheep for generations. The book follows the farming year, from summer shearing and autumn sales to winter feeding and spring lambing. Into this cycle Rebanks weaves memories of his grandfather and father, a school system that looked down on farming, the slaughter of flocks during the 2001 foot-and-mouth epidemic and his decision as an adult to study history at Oxford before returning to the fells.
