The Serviceberry
Categories: Animals, Religion & Spirituality
The Serviceberry is a 2024 book by Robin Wall Kimmerer, the botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation who wrote Braiding Sweetgrass. It takes the serviceberry, a native shrub whose fruit feeds birds and people, as its starting point. Kimmerer draws on Indigenous teachings about reciprocity to describe a gift economy, in which abundance is shared rather than hoarded. She contrasts it with market thinking built on scarcity and asks how communities might live in mutual care.
