The Science of Fear
By Dan Gardner
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
The Science of Fear is a 2008 book by Canadian journalist Daniel Gardner, published in Canada as Risk. It explains why people often fear the wrong things, worrying about terrorism or rare diseases while ignoring more common dangers such as driving. Drawing on psychology research, including the work of Daniel Kahneman and Paul Slovic, Gardner describes how intuitive judgments about risk can be misled. He shows how media, politicians, activists and marketers exploit these fears, and argues for a more rational view of risk.
