The Sane Society
By Erich Fromm
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
The Sane Society is Erich Fromm's 1955 critique of modern Western society and its effect on mental health. Fromm argues that a whole society can be unhealthy, and that consumer capitalism leaves people alienated from their work, from one another and from themselves. Building on his earlier Escape from Freedom, he examines conformity, automation and the loss of meaning, and proposes a humanistic communitarian socialism in which people could live more fully and sanely.
