The Rules of Magic is Alice Hoffman's prequel to Practical Magic, about the Owens family in the 1960s. Siblings Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens grow up in New York, warned by their mother never to fall in love, because of a family curse. When they spend a summer with their aunt in Massachusetts, they learn the truth about their magical heritage. As they come of age, each faces love, loss and the cost of breaking the rules.
