The Rules of Attraction

Categories: Literature & Fiction

The Rules of Attraction (1987) is Bret Easton Ellis's novel of 1980s student life at Camden College, a small liberal arts school in New England. It is told in turns by several students, mainly Sean, Lauren and Paul, whose overlapping accounts of the same parties and affairs often contradict one another. Through their drinking, drugs and failed romances, Ellis paints a cold picture of privileged young people who are bored, self-absorbed and unable to connect with anyone.
