Theodore Roosevelt's 1899 account of the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment he helped raise and later commanded in the Spanish-American War of 1898. He describes recruiting a mix of cowboys, ranchers, Native Americans and Ivy League athletes, training them in San Antonio, and the Cuban campaign that followed, from the fight at Las Guasimas to the assault on the San Juan Heights outside Santiago.
