The Road to the City
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Road to the City is Natalia Ginzburg's first work of fiction, a short novella she originally published under a pseudonym, in a New Directions edition translated from the Italian by Gini Alhadeff. Delia is a restless young woman in a poor provincial town: her father is absent, her mother miserable, her sister unhappy and her brothers off in their own world. Only her cousin Nini seems to see her. She drifts into disgrace and a joyless marriage upward, missing what was close at hand.

- Sarah Jessica Parker: “[Best books of 2023] They are all glorious, radically and wonderfully different from one another, and simply share one ingredient - supremely gifted authors.”
