The final novel in Sharon Kay Penman's Welsh Princes trilogy, published in 1991, follows Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native Prince of Wales, as he struggles to keep his country independent from Edward I of England. His long betrothal to Ellen de Montfort, daughter of Simon de Montfort, becomes part of the conflict. The novel traces the wars of the 1270s and 1280s that ended Welsh independence.

- Hillary Clinton: “I've recently discovered the historical novels by Sharon K. Penman. I'm reading her series about King Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Very interesting, not only well done, but really engrossing.”
