The Practice of Management

By Peter Drucker

Categories: Business & Money

Peter Drucker's 1954 book treated management as a discipline in its own right, defining the manager's work as three linked jobs: managing a business, managing managers and managing workers and work. Drucker argues that the purpose of a business is to create a customer, sets objectives in areas such as market standing, innovation, productivity and profitability, and introduces management by objectives and self-control. Case studies of Sears, Roebuck and Ford show companies thriving by developing managers or faltering by neglecting them.
