The Making of a Quagmire: America and Vietnam during the Kennedy Era

By David Halberstam

Categories: History

David Halberstam based this 1965 book on his reporting for The New York Times from Saigon in 1962 and 1963, when he came to doubt official American optimism about the war. He joins South Vietnamese troops in the Mekong Delta, recounts the defeat at Ap Bac, and traces the Buddhist protests, the pagoda raids and the fall of Ngo Dinh Diem's government. He also describes the clash between Saigon's press corps and US officials. Historian Daniel J. Singal contributes an introduction to this edition.
