The Law

By Frédéric Bastiat

Categories: Politics & Social Sciences

The Law is an 1850 essay by the French economist Frédéric Bastiat, written shortly before his death, that sets out his view of the proper role of law and government. Bastiat argues that law exists to protect life, liberty and property, and that it is perverted when it is used for 'legal plunder', taking from some to give to others. He criticizes the socialist and protectionist ideas of his time, and the essay remains a widely read text in classical liberal thought.
