The Island of Missing Trees
By Elif Shafak
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Island of Missing Trees is Elif Shafak's novel about love and division on the island of Cyprus. In 1974, Kostas, a Greek Cypriot, and Defne, a Turkish Cypriot, meet in secret at a tavern where a fig tree grows. Decades later in London, their daughter Ada tries to understand her family's past. Partly narrated by the fig tree itself, the novel explores war, memory, migration and nature, and how trauma is passed between generations.
