The Immortalist
Categories: Religion & Spirituality, Science & Math
In The Immortalist (1969), novelist and essayist Alan Harrington argues that death is a problem humanity can and should solve through science and engineering. Harrington contends that the drive to overcome mortality underlies religion, art, ambition and much of civilization, as people seek substitutes for the immortality they cannot have. He calls for directing that energy toward medical research on aging and death, an idea that influenced later life-extension movements.
