The House of the Dead
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The House of the Dead (1862) is Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel based on his own four years in a Siberian prison camp after his arrest in 1849. It is presented as the memoir of Alexander Goryanchikov, a nobleman sentenced for killing his wife. He describes the convicts, the guards, the floggings, the work and the brief holidays, and the hostility the peasant prisoners feel toward the gentry. Tolstoy admired it greatly.
