The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea
Categories: History, Science & Math
The Gulf (Norton, 2018) is historian Jack E. Davis's environmental history of the Gulf of Mexico, from its geological origins to the age of oil. Davis begins with the Calusa of southwest Florida, who thrived on the estuaries, and follows Spanish expeditions, the rise of New Orleans near the mouth of the Mississippi, and the growth of fishing, tourism and the oil industry. He shows how dredging, development, runoff and hurricanes reshaped the coast after 1945, and argues for its central place in American history.
